Gavin Ross Erwin was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. He spent many weekends and holidays camping with his parents and brothers and developed a love of nature and the great outdoors at an early age. He became obsessed with fish and fishing as soon as he could hold a rod and started tying his own flies when he was about six years old, using hair cut from the family pet dog! When Gavin matriculated he decided there was nothing he would like better than to make a career out of his two favourite hobbies, fishing and art. During the past 8 years his painting skills have improved steadily to the point that he now makes a fairly decent living as a professional artist.
In the words of our former President Thabo Mbeki: “I owe my being to the hills and the valleys, the mountains and the glades, the rivers, the deserts, the trees, the flowers, the seas and the ever-changing seasons … I know that none dare challenge me when I say I am an African.”
